The above line chart depicts the passenger throughput of China’s air transport during a span of three decades from 1990 to 2020. We can see that the data experience a steady upward trend, and since 2010 the increase rate has went up conspicuously compared with that of the first decade. Then just after the number hit a record high of nearly 700 million, the trend takes a plunge of nearly 40%.
There are several causes that can account for this phenomenon. With the economic takeoff since China’s historic reform and opening-up, Chinese have more disposable income and travelling by air has shifted from a luxury exclusive to the high earners to being available to ordinary people. And China has speeded up its infrastructure and transport network construction in the recent decade, so the number of people taking flights have seen a greater increase. The sudden drop can be explained by the Covid outbreak, travel plans have been immensely restricted by pandemic related policies, hence the decline. With the pandemic getting under control, the passenger throughput might see a slight rise, but it is unlikely to reach its record high in a short time.
