1)drop out

①“(中途)退出”。如:

The marathon runner had to drop out with only three miles to go.在离终点仅三英里时，这位马拉松运动员不得不退出比赛。

②“退学”。如:

He dropped out because of the strict school rules.由于校规很严，他退学了。

2)drop off

①“减少”。如:

Business dropped off sharply during the recession.在经济衰退期间，生意大大减少了。
