眼睛是否是“心灵的窗户”还有争议，但是眼睛在人际沟通中的重要性却毋庸置疑。婴儿出生后的头两个月，刺激他笑的是别人的眼睛，并不需要真实的眼睛，一个面具上的两个点也能使他笑。重要的是，一个人如果蒙上双眼，就不会引起婴儿的笑容，只给婴儿一个侧面，露出一只眼睛，也不能让他笑。这种眼睛的吸引力而不是鼻子或嘴的行为会随着婴儿的长大而延续。

　　Whether the eyes are“the windows of the soul” is debatable, but that they are important in interpersonal communication is without a doubt. During the first two months of a baby’s life, what stimulates his smile is a pair of eyes. The eyes need not be real: a mask with two dots will produce a smile. Significantly, a real human face with eyes covered will not motivate the baby’s smile, nor will the sight of only one eye when the face is presented in profile. The attraction to eyes rather than actions of the nose or mouth continues as the baby matures.
