Talking about Running a Business

Linda: How's business at your bookstore, Paul?

Paul: So far so good. I'm hoping that with time I'll have a larger client base.

Linda: Well, I hope it works out for you. I hear that the first year is the hardest. A lot ofbusinesses end up going under.

Paul: I've heard that statistic before but I'm still hopeful. Plus, I've leamed a few things aboutbeing self-employed.

Linda: Such as?

Paul: Oh, just some of the basics. Like knowing that sometimes you need to spend money tomake money, but also keeping in mind that every dollar invested in the business is anotherdollar that eventually has to be recouped from sales.

Linda: That makes sense.

Paul: It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the purpose of a business is to makemoney. It's easy to make money in the short run, but the real purpose is to create value forboth yourself and your customers. That's what keeps people coming back.

Linda: That's good thinking! You really sound like you know what you're doing.
