秀水街形成于1980年，一群有抱负的年轻人在北京秀水东街做起了自己的生意，当时仅有几个极其简陋的摊位。他们做丝绸及外贸服装生意。尽管简陋朴素，秀水街的内在魅力还是掩藏(obscure)不住的。当越来越多的摊贩(vendor)开始售卖中国传统丝绸制品和手工制品，秀水街便因此而得名。北京秀水街，与长城、故宫、烤鸭这些“北京象征”一起，成为很多海内外游客到北京旅游的一个地标。
